Swatch turns the MoonSwatch into a golden tribute to Apollo 11
There are a few modern watch collaborations that have had the cultural impact of the MoonSwatch. More than three years after its debut, the partnership between OMEGA and Swatch continues to surprise collectors with new interpretations of the iconic Speedmaster. Some releases have leaned playful, others seasonal, but the newest edition may be the collaboration’s most thoughtful yet.
Released to commemorate the anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing on July 21, 1969, the new MISSION TO THE MOON 1969 is limited to just 1,969 pieces and introduces genuine OMEGA 18K Moonshine™ Gold to the MoonSwatch collection.
What makes this release particularly compelling is that the use of gold feels intentional rather than excessive. The dial, hour and minute hands, crown, and chronograph pushers are all crafted from OMEGA’s proprietary Moonshine™ Gold, totaling 11 grams. The number is, of course, a reference to Apollo 11, but the story extends well beyond that.
Rather than sourcing newly mined gold, OMEGA created the material by melting down vintage spare parts dating back to the era of the original Moon landing. It is a subtle but meaningful touch that gives the watch an authentic historical connection while reinforcing the significance of the anniversary it celebrates.
The design itself also pays tribute to another important chapter in Speedmaster history. The warm gold dial draws inspiration from OMEGA’s commemorative gold Speedmaster introduced in 1969, following the success of Apollo 11. Vertical brushing across the dial, vintage-inspired typography, gold indexes with black lacquer detailing, and a black Bioceramic bezel with a gold-colored tachymeter scale create what is arguably the most sophisticated MoonSwatch released to date.
That attention to detail continues on the reverse of the watch. The battery cover features a golden moon displaying the date of the Apollo 11 landing alongside a footprint representing humanity’s first steps on the Sea of Tranquility. Each watch is also individually numbered, with its edition number engraved into the side of the case and filled with gold-colored lacquer. These aren’t groundbreaking features, but they demonstrate the level of care that went into making this release feel genuinely commemorative rather than simply another limited edition.
Swatch was equally thoughtful with the pricing. Despite incorporating solid 18K gold components, the watch will retail for CHF 500. Rather than tying the price to today’s gold market, the brand looked back to July 21, 1969, when 11 grams of 18K gold cost approximately $11. Pricing the watch around that historical moment is a clever detail that fits perfectly with the spirit of the release.
The buying experience has also been reimagined. Instead of the traditional boutique queue or online checkout, prospective buyers must complete an Electronic Swatch Timepiece Application, or ESTA, a tongue-in-cheek reference to the travel authorization required for many visitors entering the United States. The online application consists of 32 questions, and only 1,969 applicants will receive approval, granting them the opportunity to purchase the watch at a Swatch boutique. It is an entertaining twist that turns the purchasing process into part of the overall experience.
The MoonSwatch collection has always succeeded because it never tried to replace the Speedmaster Professional. Instead, it has introduced one of watchmaking’s greatest icons to an entirely new generation through creativity, accessibility, and clever storytelling.
