It’s hard to believe, but it’s been 50 years now since Jaws was released to theaters, but here we are, under the sway of time’s inexorable march forward. While that movie definitely made people worried about going into the water, the Seiko Prospex JAWS 50th Anniversary LE is one that will be happy to accompany you in.
What is the watch based on?
The Seiko Prospex JAWS 50th Anniversary LE carries a model designation of SRPL81, which is of course part of the Prospex Diver lineup. There are any number of other very similar-looking designs, like the SRPE07, for instance. Tellingly, though, Seiko doesn’t list a direct inspiration for the model, so we’ll just say it evokes some of those other models.
So, what is the Seiko Prospex JAWS 50th Anniversary LE?
For starters, it’s very much a dive watch that can be used as one, with the uni-directional bezel (complete with a ceramic insert) encircling the sapphire crystal. With the crown screwed down, you can net a 300m WR rating, which is more than enough to go take a dip in the water at the beach. It’s paired to a silicone strap (great for not getting water logged), and has Seiko’s very solid LumiBrite taking up the task of lighting the dial when things get dark.
What ties it to the movie?
That’s a pretty fair question, and there are a few clever cues on the watch. First off, the gradient dial of the Seiko Prospex JAWS 50th Anniversary LE evokes the original movie poster (with the shark visible in the right lighting and angle). You’ve also got the Jaws logo printed right near the center of the dial.
Around on the caseback, you’ve got an engraving of the Orca, the boat (of “need a bigger boat” fame) from the movie, complete with the dorsal fin of the titular shark emerging from the waves.
Wrapping things up
If you want to get your own copy of the Seiko Prospex JAWS 50th Anniversary LE, just 5000 of them are being made, with the price set at $795. As to where to get them, the release we saw just says that they’ll be available next month (July 2025) at select retail locations, so we’re not sure if that also means they’ll be available online.
