Magic Eagle EagleCam 5: just launched
A wireless, solar-powered trail cam to keep an eye on things
These days, getting yourself setup with some cameras around your home and property is a pretty simple thing. There are plenty of battery-operated options that connect over wifi, so you don’t have to run any sort of cabling. But what about those areas where you simply don’t have a wifi signal? Say, out on the far corner of your property? That’s where something like the Magic Eagle EagleCam 5 comes in.

Magic Eagle EagleCam 5: what it is
At it’s heart, the Magic Eagle EagleCam 5 is just like any number of other trail cams. It’s designed to be unobtrusive (note the camo pattern on the case), with a simple strap system for mounting it up onto a tree. Trail cams operate a lot like your home cameras, in that they sit waiting to detect motion, and when they do, it records what’s going on.
Where the Magic Eagle EagleCam 5 starts getting a little different is how you’re actually able to get at those recordings. Instead of traipsing out to get a memory card (this one can handle up to a 256GB card) out of the camera, this camera has a built in 4G cellular connection, which means you can check what’s going on right from the app on your phone. From what we’ve seen in the user guide, it looks like this 4G connection will come with a free trial, but then after that, it’ll be up to you to get the subscription going (see at the end of the article what the pricing structure looks like).

It’s also solar-powered
Battery-operated cameras are great, because it means they can go up just about anywhere. As with anything battery-powered, though, you’re always thinking about how to manage that battery life. With the Magic Eagle EagleCam 5, it’s built ready to handle a solar panel. That panel hooks up via the easy-to-use USB-C connection, which means you can watch the live stream as much as you want, and not worry about draining the battery.
Could someone just grab it?
That’s one risk about a small, compact device like the Magic Eagle EagleCam 5. You set it up on some remote corner to see if those deer are back walking through, and someone - in theory - could abscond with the camera. Now, nothing will stop them from grabbing it if they are so-inclined.
However, your recordings are also available in the cloud, so you’d have a record of who grabbed it. Additionally, it’s got a sensor that detects if the camera is being moved, that triggers it to take photos. Past that, it’s got AGPS built in, so you have a record in the app of just where the camera is.
Wrapping things up
Personally, I can think of a lot of uses for devices like this. If you’ve got a longer piece of property, odds are good that your wifi doesn’t reach all the way out there. And if you want to see how those raccoons are getting into trouble, well, this will do it. Or shoot, even if you want to just keep an eye on your campsite while you’re off hiking - again, this will do it. Finally, of course, you could set it up on your property just to see what sort of critters are moving through, and see what you might be able to hunt for, or perhaps keep an eye out for.
The Magic Eagle EagleCam 5 just launched today, and is carrying a retail price tag of $129.99. However, to celebrate the launch, they’re putting 5,000 units up at a discounted price of $79.99 (an almost 40% discount). Want to get one to track all the critters going around in your area?
