A new watch to mark 50 years of Eco-Drive

When it comes to Citizen, we tend to focus on the larger designs, as those are the ones that appeal to our tastes. However, there’s something to be said for being aware of what is happening in their other lines. This year marks 50 years of their Eco-Drive technology, and we’ll see seeing all sorts of new stuff there. Today, we want to talk about the smallest watch to-date that houses Eco-Drive: the new Citizen Fio.

Citizen Fio: what it is

While it would be easy to call the Citizen Fio a watch aimed at women, we’ll categorize it this way: it’s a watch for someone who prefers a smaller case size on their wrist, whatever the reason. Interestingly, this new line has two different case shapes.

The first is an elongated rectangular case, which feels very bracelet-like. This comes in either silver or gold-tone finishes, and either on a leather strap or a stainless steel mesh. On the other hand, the round case comes only on the mesh, with a dial color dictated by the metal finish color selected.

While there are different movements in the different cases, the fact remains the same - this is Eco-Drive technology. Which means that they will power themselves by any light source, not just the sun. Past that, you’ve got a simple two-handed time display, with no other complications.

Wrapping things up

In short, this is an excellent watch for anyone with a smaller wrist that never wants to be concerned about the watch running out of power. While the round case feels a bit dressier, it is the Citizen Fio that has the higher WR rating at 30m (while the rectangular is just splash resistant). So, bear that in mind if water is a big part of your day.
