Welcome back to our weekly installment, Watching the Web, where we have a quick look at some interesting watches and articles that have popped up around the inter-webs over the last week (or so), as well as taking a second look at what some of our more popular articles this week. I thought I would point you toward a lovely tourbillon by boutique watchmakers Manufacture Royale, as well as Los Angeles Times profile of Cameron Weiss, and an opportunity for some hands on time with boutique German watches.
If you happen to have a spare $48,000 to $70,000 laying about, you may be interested in the 1770 Collection from Manufacture Royale. The Watch Lounge recently published a hands on review of this line, and I will admit I am a bit jealous. As the review rightly points out, the tourbillon here is a thing of beauty.
It is always nice when the mainstream press shines a spotlight on a corner of the watchmaking industry, and this week the Los Angeles times published a nice profile of the man behind Weiss Watches, Cameron Weiss. Weiss is based in the Los Angeles area, and is a Southern California native. I put together a short piece on the Weiss Watch Standard Issue, and the LA Times article helps to bring out the human side of the company.
Lastly, at least for the external links, Shane Griffin at Wound for Life took us inside a road show put on by WatchBuys, an opportunity for some hands on time with boutique German watch brands like Sinn, Nomos, Junghans, and D. Dornblüth & Son. There are upcoming shows open for registration in Seattle and New York, as well as planned shows in Atlanta, Raleigh, San Francisco, Houston, and Orange County, CA (I am going to keep that one on my radar). If you are interested in one of these brands, but have not been able to check one out in person, this is a great opportunity.
Looking at our own site over the last week, the Zelos Chroma was the watch review that generated the most views. This is the second watch from the new company, and I happen to be an owner of the first model, the Helmsman. The watch project on Kickstarter has about a week left before it is funded.
A lot of people also seem to be asking, “What is an Oulm?” I will be honest, I had no idea either, but Patrick’s article from 2012 is one of our top articles of all time, and again peaked near the top of page views this week. Maybe people are thinking about them as cheap stocking stuffers for the coming holiday season. If that is the case, wait around until we publish our gift guide next month.
