Morning Dew On A Web Desktop Background
Thanks for taking the time to check out our weekly installment, Watching the Web, where we point you toward some interesting watches and articles that have popped up over the last week (or so), and take a second look at what were our more popular pages. Today, we have horological discrepancies in the movies, an Apple Watch editorial, and a look at engraving on wristwatches.  After that, of course, we run down the more popular articles from our own pages.  Read on to see what we have in store for you!

First up, we’ve got an article that I’ve actually been sitting on for a while for whatever reason.  Over at Worn & Wound, they have a run-down of various watches that show up on the big screen.  The twist here is that they’re focusing on watches that are simply not right for the timeframe of the movie.  Whereas shows like Mad Men are very period-correct, sometimes prop masters may not have quite that level of detail.  Check out the writeup here for what discrepancies they’ve found.

Apple-Watch-421This week, a lot of news has been about the Apple Watch being released.  Over at Everyday Commentary (a site that focuses on a variety of gear), there’s an article on why the Apple Watch simply won’t be the right watch for the author.  While it should not be a surprise that a particular watch isn’t for everyone, it does give you some good things to think about, should you be considering the Apple Watch, or I suppose any smart watch.

Last, but not least, I ran across this article over at WorldTempus that goes over what is becoming an increasingly rare feature, engraving on wristwatches.  The article itself talks through some of the techniques, but for me the real draw were the images shown in the piece – there are some really amazing looking watches.

Ventus Caspian 01As with last week, our most popular post this last week was Matt’s look at the Ventus Caspian watches, currently selling on Kickstarter.  It is a nice looking pilot, and the project is rather over-funded (about 5x, with about a week to go).  If somehow you’ve not heard about these yet, check out the writeup here.

Next up, we’ve got an older article, but one I was pleasantly surprised to see crop up – the Techne Merlin.  In the variety of watches that we see and write about, there is something very definitely to be said about the simplicity and cleanness that are commonly seen in the Techne lineup.

Last, but not least, we’ve got John’s review of the Omega Speedmaster.  This is by far one of John’s favorite watches, and he presents a good run-down on the watch, as well as some of the history for the model.  I personally find the ’57 re-issue from a year or so ago more interesting, but it’s worth taking a look at what the more common styling has been.

Torgoen-T5-GMT-13Tax day just came and went, so you may find your watch fund a bit lighter than you’d like.  If that’s you, be sure to  enter the monthly drawing for a free watch.  The Torgoen T5 GMT is a Swiss made timepiece with Patrick’s favorite complication (and one I think is darn useful), the GMT.  You can read his review here, and then head to the contest page and enter.

Wrist ShotWe also want to put the call out for wrist shots of our reader’s favorite (or at least favorite of the moment) watches.  Put together an email of your wrist shot and tell us a little about the watch and why you love it.  If you happened to be introduced to it through our site (or won it through a give-away), even better.  Just make sure the image is a JPEG and at least 860 pixels wide.

With that, we will wrap things up. As always, if there’s something you think we should be covering, feel free to drop us a line. If you bring something up that we end up writing about, we’ll be sure to tip our hats (electronically, if not literally) in your general direction.
