Virata, the little watch company from Ohio, just sent me a prototype of their latest piece and I have to say I’m impressed. When I first wrote about the pieces I had just spoken to their creator, a dude named Patrick Wacks from Canton, Ohio. Wacks was inspired by Formula 1 racers and decided to test his engineering mettle by becoming a watchmaker. He succeeded.

As Matt and I have both mentioned in the past, we have noticed a lot of the same sort of watch being produced on Kickstarter (generally thin quartz two- or three-handers with a lot of marketing fluff). So, to see something crop up that has a bit more original of a design, then that is the sort of thing that makes you sit up and take notice. I am not saying that the Tenero Automatic will set the horological world on fire. It should, however, catch the eye of the those on the hunt for an interesting and affordable watch.

When it comes to watches, you suffer no lack of choice when it comes to case shapes. You have your classic styles, your vintage/historic shapes, and then you have a category where a brand comes up with something that is perhaps viewed as taking things in a new direction. Some of these case shapes do not work out well, and others (such as on the Visitor Watch Co Duneshore) are rather stunning. As to where the Dietrich Organic Time falls, hard to say without seeing it in the steel, but I think it’s making a claim to the positive.
