Last month, Steinhart released it’s newest model, with the main inspiration coming from automotive racing (and some famous race-related watches of eras gone by).
The Racetimer features a 44mm case (16mm thick) made from titanium, and is powered by the ETA Valjoux 7750 (elabore grade) automatic movement. The movement features a golden rotor with the Steinhart logo cut out (which is visible via the exhibition caseback), and enables the chronograph functions, as well as the day and date displays. For these models, the dial is really the standout feature for me.
Having not taken a close look previously at models like the vintage Heuers (or the more modern Tudors with the same sort of look), I never quite got why you had the contrasting color around the chronograph subdials. Taking a look at this Steinhart, I think I’m finally understanding.
In short, it makes those dials stand out from the small seconds, and (in the case of the blue and white dial) brings the timing function very quickly to the forefront, which would be of critical importance in a racing situation. Along with those dials, of course, you have a color-matched tachymeter inlay in the stainless steel bezel.
And color is definitely something you have some choice with here as well. While I really dig the classic blue-and-white combo, there’s also a brown dial (with darker brown and cream accents) and a grey dial (with black and white accents). Along with the choice in color, you can choose to pair the watch with a leather strap or a titanium bracelet.
I think whichever way you go, this is an interesting vintage look that delivers the same great value that Steinhart has become known for. Just be careful around water – the 50m WR rating will offer some protection, but don’t try to swim with it.
At a price just under $1000 (outside the EU, that is. Inside, the price is 890 EUR due to VAT). Frankly, that price seems like a great one considering you’re getting titanium and a 7750 movement. Of course, the great vintage-inspired looks don’t hurt, either. steinhartwatches.de
