Reviewing the new AVI-8 P-51 Mustang Chronograph

AVI-8 has a large list of cool aviation models. I have reviewed their Hawker Harrier II, their Flyboy Chronograph, and their Hawker Hunter chronograph. All have been great examples of aviation inspired watches. Just recently AVI-8 has released their P-51 Mustang Chronograph. When I saw this one I knew I had to check it out – let’s take a look.

There is a lot going on with this AVI-8 P-51 Mustang dial. First off, there are the main hands on this dial: hour, minute, and chronograph seconds. Then there are three subdials: 24-hour, running seconds, and the chronograph minutes. Whats really cool about these subdials is that they are look like gauges from the Mustang’s cockpit. Very cool. All of this is protected by a mineral lens with anti-reflective coating. Powering the watch is a Japanese quartz chronograph with date and 1/5 second sweep.

The stainless steel case on the AVI-8 Mustang uses both brushed and polished finishes. A polished finish is done to the top of the case, crown guard, and pushers. The sides are nicely polished and looks great pair with the brushed finish. The bezel is a fixed tachymeter scale. I know pilots and racers have used these, but I have no clue how to use them. Not even going to try. (Editor’s note: here’s how). Its just looks good to me. The case back is solid and has a cool engraving of a Mustang fighter. Since this is an aviation watch, the water resistance is only 165 feet, so don’t plan on bringing this in the water.

I really like the strap on this watch. The leather is thick but confortable on the wrist. The signed pin and buckle clasp is just the right size, and really looks good. This goes so well with the style of this watch.

There is plenty of lume on this AVI-8 Mustang. It’s interesting to see the dark spots where the gauge like sub dials cut into the digits. You can barely the the top portion of the 6 digit, but its obvious what number that is. The lume is bright and looks fantastic.

AVI-8 did a great job with this P-51 Mustang Blakeslee Chronograph. The design of that aviation inspired dial really looks cool and interesting. If you love aviation this is for you.
