You might be surprised that Oris announced another Sun Wukong (aka the Monkey King) watch so recently on the heels of the previous one. While I’m not familiar with the film, but even so, this is a dial that I can get behind. Let’s have a look at what makes the Oris Sun Wukong Artist Edition so special.
The dial of the Oris Sun Wukong Artist Edition pulls from the film, The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven. Specifically, it’s from the scene where Sun Wukong finds a weapon in the Dragon King’s underwater palace. You might be thinking, ok, it’s a cool underwater scene, but what is special about the dial?
The dial itself is cloisonné enamel, hand-painted and built up on the dial blank. This will give you a richness and luster you’re not going to see on many dials. While I’ve experience enamel dials – and like the look – I’ve not seen one in person that gives the gradations of tone and variety in hues that we see on this dial. Frankly, it looks like something rather special, even if you don’t know the film.
For fans of Sun Wukong looking to get one of these $27,500 watches will want to move fast, as only 72 pieces are being made. This matches with the number of forms Sun Wukong can take. While a bit outside of my price range, it definitely makes for a very special Oris Aquis. oris.ch
