Breitling is a brand that we are all no doubt aware of. John wrote about them not that long ago (seen here), but I’ve tended not to cover them that much. Not out of any personal animus with the brand, it’s just that their very aviation- and chronograph-focused just have not caught my interest, to put it bluntly. So, it was a pleasant surprise with the release news came in about the new Breitling Superocean collection.

Now, to be fair, the Breitling Superocean has been around for a bit. The earlier models, those still had a bit of that “ok, we make flying watches but here’s a diver for you” sort of a look and feel to them. These new models, though? These are proper looking dive watches. Helps that they were inspired by the Breitling Superocean “Slow Motion” of the 1960s, which is clearly evident in this design. You’ve got the retro-funky look with the blocky minute hand (making it stand out clearly) which is then echoed in the luminous indices. In some ways, with the unique hand shape and the overall retro vibe – and the dial colors – this feels almost like stuff we could see from Zodiac, if we’re being honest.

To be clear, these are Breitling through and through, and it’s based off of a model from 60 years ago, so no foul there. And really, these hits of color and going to create divers from the 60’s and 70’s lookbooks? Quite a number of folks doing it, it’s just my brain making the associations between the brands.

For these new Breitling Superocean models, there were a number of new references released. You’ve got cases sizes of 36, 42, 44, and 46mm coming out, and those are showing up in steel, steel-and-gold, and bronze. Throw in the different dial colors as well as the different rubber straps (or a steel bracelet for some models), and you’ve got quite an assortment here that will no doubt have something to fit your particular tastes. In terms of pricing, it’s par for the course with Breitling. The 36mm steel versions of the Breitling Superocean start at $4,600, while the top of the range (in terms of pricing) would be the bronze models, which top out at $5,600. Everything else – including the 1,000-piece limited edition done in collaboration with Kelly Slater – falls somewhere in-between.
