We like to see watches coming from all over the world. You often have different design elements coming into a watch based on the culture and history of a region. For that reason, some collectors go the route of gathering watches from a variety of countries. If that’s you, and you’ve not marked off Croatia, the pre-order for the Perun Veles will be of interest.
History of the brand
Perun is a fairly new brand, and not one from folks who have been in the watch industry previously. While it started as a fun side project, eventually the founder, Jelena Kalajzic, left their job as an orchestral violinist and violin teacher to focus on this watch. The design itself has been in the works for the past two years.
Slavic symbology
For the Perun Veles, there has been a lot of design inspiration taken from the region. On the dial, you’ll see a font you’re not going to recognize. That’s Glagolitic script, created in the 9th century and used in Croatia until the 19th century. The horns over the 12 o’clock indice? Those are taken from the Slavic god Veles, who was depicted with elk horns on his head. The crown, case back, and watch box have other references as well, and you can see those detailed here. In short, the watch is one deeply rooted in the region.
Perun Veles: the hard specs
One of the first things we look at when it comes to a brand-new watch company is what movement is inside the watch. Here, it’s a name we’re all quite familiar with – Sellita. It’s the SW221-1 movement, and is the reason that we have a date pointer hand, rather than a date display window.
The movement is tucked away in a 40mm case (12.35mm tall), sealed up with a screwed-in case back, screw-down crown, and topped with a AR-coated sapphire crystal. This all comes together to give the watch a 150m WR rating, which is more than enough for you to do some swimming.
The aesthetics
Overall, the Perun Veles presents as a steel sports watch, complete with the lumed sword hands. The inclusion of the date hand (and the dates printed on the chapter ring) give the watch a bit more of a dress watch feel. The black-dialed version likely will feel a bit more every-day, as the bracelet is all brushed. The white dial, on the other hand, comes with the center links brushed, for that extra pop of light.
