Introducing the Oak & Oscar Sandford

Ah, the sophmore effort. Many a-time, a brand (be it music, watch, or anything else) has a much easier time with their first creation, as people are not quite sure what to expect. By the time their second outing rolls around, a line has been drawn in the sand, and it can be just as easy to fail as it is to succeed. Fortunately, it looks like my fellow Chicagoan Chase Fancher has followed the latter path, as his second creation, the Oak & Oscar Sandford, looks pretty solid.

Time changes with the SANS-13 Evolution

It was three years ago that I went hands-on with the original Smith & Bradley Sans-13. Since then, I have reviewed every other watch that the brand has put out, which you can see here and here. While we are still working to get one of their latest in – the Smith & Bradley Sans-13 Evolution – I wanted to get a preview in place for you, as their Kickstarter project just recently launched. Vintage vibes with the Vapaus Veli

As you probably surmised from that title, I have a thing for alliteration. Well, several types of word play, but we have what we have on hand. Know what else I have a thing for? As it turns out, it’s watches with a slick vintage feel. Show me a watch with a thin case, minimal bezel, and a visibly domed crystal, and I am definitely paying attention. This is a style that we see pop up now and again, and I do not get tired of running across it. The latest iteration find itself with a Swiss-made heart, and goes by the name of the Vapaus Veli.

Coloring outside the lines with the Nomad Outline

Hands On Zelos Eagle E-1A

Zelos has made a watch that looks equal parts jet engine and landmine and named it after an Eagle. The Eagle E-1A is an automatic behemoth that is sure to be noticed on the wrist of anyone with the arm-strength to wear it.

The CJR Airspeed Regulator

The CJR Airspeed Regulator watch launched on Kickstarter a short while ago, and so far, has raised over 93,000 US dollars. It’s powered by a Miyota 9015 movement. It’s got a really nice leather strap, sewn with cotton thread. I could tell you all these things, but none of that would tell you how cool a watch this is.

When it comes to brands producing homage watches, you certainly have no shortage of choice. There are all manner of mushroom brands haunting auction sites, as well as the more established – yet still built to an astoundingly low price point – brands turning out copies of watches that used to be. Then you get to brands like MKII who draw inspiration for their designs from those of the past (and are open about what those inspirations are), blend them together, and come up with something that is both recognizable and their own. Their latest foray is known as the MKII Hawkinge.
