Watching the Web for February 13, 2016

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

Is it half-way through February already (did you do your Valentine’s day Shopping yet?), and time for our Saturday feature, Watching the Web. Here, we look though some of the other watch-centric web sites and highlight a few that we think merit your attention. We also get to show you what was most popular over the last week or so on our own site. From the web at large, I wanted to highlight the Mühle-Glashütte 29er, a round up of watches celebrating the Year of the Monkey, and the Dievas MG-1. From our articles, the Ventus Black Kite, John gift pick of he Seiko Automatic Deep Blue, and the Vortic Boston 48 were the most popular posts.

The WWR 2015 Holiday Gift Guide

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

Earlier this year I was attending an alumni event and the subject matter turned to watches (how I turned it there I don’t recall). One of the group asked what I would recommend for her to get her boyfriend as a gift. My first question was how much money she wanted to spend. When she said roughly $1,000, I immediately recommended a Weiss. Her question also got me thinking about how I could organize the 2015 holiday gift guide. So for this iteration, I will recommend my favorite watch (or watch related gift) in each of several price ranges. Chances are, if I like it, especially if it under about $1,500, we have covered it in the past, since that is the kind of people we are; but there may be watches here (especially at the high end) that have not graced our pages.

Watching the Web for November 7, 2015

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

Welcome to the Saturday feature we like to call Watching the Web, where we take a few moments to point out interesting watches and watch related posts that we discover across the web, and also highlight a few of our most popular posts of the last week or so. Today, I thought I would take a walk down memory lane with a very early “smart” watch, take a look at what material science can do for our wrists, and point you toward a watch with roots in both Belgium and Mexico. From our site, we have reviews of the Smith & Bradley Springfield and the Corniche 40, as well as a look at ETA movements.

Dear Hopeful Crowd Funded Watchmakers – An Open Letter from a Fan

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

Dear Hopeful Crowd Funded Watchmaker; Allow me to start by saying that I think you are doing something really cool, and that I am a huge fan. This is the first time in history where the power to build, market and sell a watch is not vested in the few, but open to anyone with an idea and a bit of money. I think that a lot of the projects that you come up with are attractive, interesting and offer a great value. Heck, I have backed a couple of projects myself. And to keep from singling anyone out, the crowdfunded projects I show here are the projects that I feel are doing it the right way.

Wingman Watches Aviation Designs Takes Off on Kickstarter

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

When I looked at the design of the new Wingman chronograph for sale on Kickstarter, I was taken with the simplicity of the design, and it looked like it was comfortable to wear. When I read the “story” behind the watch, I re-read the same thing I read over and over again with crowd funded watches, countless hours spent designing a quality watch that would be affordable, yadda, yadda, yadda. Then I got to the t-shirt they are selling. “…we only had 2 requirements: Have a simple design; Make it ridiculously comfortable.” To me, this should have been the guiding principle behind the Wingman Watches Aviation designs, because that is what I see when I look at the watch.

Watching the Web For May 9, 2015

Welcome one and all to our weekly installment of Watching the Web, where we point you (momentarily) away from our site to some interesting watches related articles from across the net, and we recap some of our own more popular articles. Today, I am going to highlight a pair of watches that really caught my eye, for totally different reasons, and recap the Smith & Bradley Ambush, take another look at the Nevo smartwatch, and highlight a vintage EDC.
