Steinhart is a brand that gets a lot of mention when one is looking for a value brand in Swiss watches. Most of their offerings are well made and attractive, and come at price points that are reachable for the average beginning collector, or someone looking to step up from a quartz watch. A new watch from the firm, the Marine Chronograh, fits nicely in that mold.
Today, we’ll be taking a look at the second James McCabe model that was sent over for review. While the first one we reviewed was a bit of a mixed bag for me, today’s model I found to be a better option – at least for my tastes and wrist size. As we saw before, James McCabe doesn’t go in for fancy names on their lineup. This watch line is known simply as the Master; our specific reference for the review is the JM-1011-03.

I know it is Spring for everyone else, but I live in Southern California, and it is pretty nice year round, so I don’t really get the winter blues (but I did love seeing your weather troubles Patrick). So with great weather around, my mind automatically turns to hockey, with the LA Kings playing the Anaheim Ducks in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. No matter who wins, So. Cal. is headed to the next round. So when I saw the Noble Watch project, the Pursuit, on Kickstarter, my immediate association was ‘hockey puck.’

Christopher Ward is a name that is well known to the site. My favorite watch that I own is a C11, I am pretty sure Patrick has at least one CW, and a friend of mine recently picked up a dress quartz from the company. With direct sales, quality products, and a broad design appeal, they are a company that I can easy recommend to anyone looking for a watch. Right now, they are accepting pre-orders for the C5 Malvern Slimline, due to ship at the end of June.
In general, I tend to see new brands go the crowdfunding route, or perhaps new-ish brands returning to the crowdfunding scene for a second or third model. The Techne SparrowHawk II Eco, however, is the second recent project I have seen that was launched by an established brand. Techne has been covered on these pages previously, and I own a Harrier model, so they are not unknown to us. The produce quality wristwatches with a military/aviation theme, and the styling of this project is not a departure for the brand.

Magrette is offering fans a chance to order a new watch from them, the Leoncino (Little Lion), an automatic that takes its design cues from the styles of the 60s. The case is a squared off cushion style, with lugs that taper from the edges of the case to the strap. The finish is polished stainless steel (brushed on the sides), perfect to go with bright chrome fenders. The dial, however, that is pure Magrette DNA with a clean modern look.
It doesn’t seem like it was that long ago that I brought you a review of the HMT Poljot, an extremely affordable (under $50) hand-wound watch out of India. That post garnered a lot of interest, and to this day I still get inquiries as to where, exactly, I picked the watch up, as people wanted to get their own. Today, we’ll have a look at a slightly different model, the Janata.
Romain Jerome does things… differently. Their latest watch is a commemoration of a grand geologic event, that happened to ground air traffic in Northern Europe for 6 days. The Eyjafjallajökull (Icelandic for “Island mountain glacier”) volcano erupted in April 2010, creating some spectacular images, but also producing an ash cloud that disrupted air travel in Europe. The watch is part of the DNA series, meaning that it contains a part of the namesake, in this case volcanic stone. This iteration, with an Evo designation, is the third in the line, with a black PVD stainless steel case.
