In the wide, wide world of watches, we’re accustomed to seeing watch designs that look like a homage to the Sea Dweller or Submariner. It makes sense – it’s an iconic look, and it’s proven to be a robust design. If that’s the path you’re taking, how do you make the watch stand out? One path you can take – which the O.U.T.C.A.S.T wrist watch has done – is to make one complicated bezel insert.
O.U.T.C.A.S.T Wrist Watch – Bezel
Realistically, anyone laying eyes on the O.U.T.C.A.S.T Watch is going to ask about that bezel. So, why is it like that? Well, the guy behind it – Robert Valli – was a professional sled dog racer, and that was the genesis for this particular design:
Back when I was racing, I wore a Sea Dweller (because you really can’t hurt those watches) but I was trying to use the elapsed timing bezel to calculate the countdowns until my next heat… and then, in the chute, I would have to remember to look down and reset the elapsed timer again, so I could track my elapsed race time… It sucked. Great watch, but the wrong tool for what I needed.
I needed countdown bezel that would allowed me to set the triangle to the exact time when I would leave the chute… and then once that countdown went to zero, I could just shift my gaze to start reading off of the elapsed timer… without ever having to reset, or even look down at the bezel, at the worst possible moment. Because when the count goes to zero… and I pull my ice hooks… I need to unleash hell, not be messing around with my watch.
O.U.T.C.A.S.T Watch – Price
So, yeah, there’s a lot going on there. If you’re just a desk diver (like me) who maybe times the eggs or parking meter, this might be a bit of overkill. However, if you find yourself in situations like Valli was, then this could be the tool for you. Or shoot, maybe you just want a Rollie homage, and in that case, a $200 one powered by an NH35 movement is hard to argue against. If you want to get one, just do so before the campaign closes out on November 16th. campaign page / outcastwatch.com
