Two years ago, we brought you word of the first three mooonphase watches that Mu:n was releasing (you can read about those here). Like any good company, they’re back with a brand new version, one that has a pretty special moon and stars configuration. Let’s go through the Mu:n Orion, which just launched on Kickstarter.
Mu:n Orion: what it is
Mu:n is all about moonphase complications, and the Mu:n Orion is no exception. This one has a pretty spectacular moon phase disc. Using laser printing, they’ve made a luminescent moon that has all the texture that we can see on the moon from earth. Surrounding that SuperLuminova moon is an accurate map of the Orion constellation, and all of the celestial objects that surround in. In other words, if you like the night sky, this is going to be quite the treat.
The mechanicals
When you’re dealing with a moonphase watch, the movement has some special consideration. Here, it’s the Sellita SW288-1m running at 4Hz. This gives a 29.5 day lunar cycle, and overall the watch should run at +/- 7 seconds per day. As it is manually wound, you’ll want to keep it wound if you want that moonphase to stay on track.
The rest of the hard specs
As you would expect for a moonphase watch, the steel case of the Mu:n Orion is on the more compact size, at 38mm (and just 10.6mm thick). It is rated with a 100m WR, so plenty for a swim or getting caught in the rain. It’s all topped with a AR-coated sapphire crystal (plus another one around back), and the movement you’ll see there can run for up to 42 hours.
Wrapping things up
While retail pricing for the Mu:n Orion is 1,550€, earlybird pricing starts at 960€. Even though the campaign just launched, it’s already smashed through it’s funding goal. The campaign will end on October 20, 2024, with delivery anticipated for May of 2025. Check it all out over at kickstarter.com / munwatches.com
