Surprisingly, this year marks 80 years of the Mido Ocean Star collection being around. Pair that with their signature colors being orange and black, and you know what sort of treatments we’re going to be seeing. The latest one to cross our digital desks has quite the dial to it. Time to meet the latest Mido Ocean Star 39.

Mido Ocean Star 39: the dial

Let’s just start with the dial of the Mido Ocean Star 39, because that’s the star of this particular release. It has an undulating wave pattern that reminds one of – what else – the waves on the ocean. Or perhaps even the pattern left in the sand as the waves move in and out. Whatever the association, water is involved.

Here it’s done in a black that has gradients due to that pattern. While wavy lines could interfere with legibility, we’ve got polished applied indices (triangles and pips) filled with orange SuperLuminova, with the same treatment (polishing and orange) on the handset as well. In other words, legibility shouldn’t be an issue.

The movement

What we like about the movements in Mido watches is that there is no guess work when it comes to the power reserve of the movements inside. Not only that, they definitely push the limits of what we’re expecting from those reserves.

For the Mido Ocean Star 39, it has the MIDO Caliber 72 inside, which has a – wait for it – 72 hour power reserve. That’s right – fully-wound, you could take this watch off your wrist, come back three days later, and have it still be running.

The case

Again, no surprises here, because the watch tells you what it’s all about – the Mido Ocean Star 39 is a 39mm diameter case that’s 10.5mm thick, offers 20mm lugs, and has a 46mm lug-to-lug measurement. Which means that this 200m-rated diver is going to be rather comfortable, and fit a variety of wrists.

Wrapping things up

\If you can’t tell, we do rather like this latest version of the Mido Ocean Star 39. That’s right, this is actually the fourth one that they’ve released. Myself, I’m partial to the blue/black dial version, but this classic Mido color palette is quite nice as well. If you want this version, it’ll be $1,170, while the other three variants are $1,100.
