Within the Marathon lineup, their Government Search and Rescue (GSAR) models are all but iconic for the brand. It shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that it’s become a platform for various special editions. Today, on Canada Day, there’s a new Marathon Arctic Red Maple GSAR available.

Arctic Red Maple GSAR: what’s different

This is not the only version of the Maple that Marathon has released. Prior versions featured a black dial, and then the maple leaf either in bright red or a stealthier grey. This time around, we’re dealing with a bright white dial with the maple leaf in red.

If you get one of the 157 limited-edition models, you also get some other additional touches. For one, you get a numbered caseback. For another, you get a curious engraving on the side of the case: ADANAC. What’s this? It’s Canada spelled backwards, and there’s a particular reason for it. When Marathon was supplying Allied Forces, branding on watches was limited. So, they put the ADANAC on it to make it clear the watch hailed from the great white north.

What’s the same?

As you might expect, under the covers, the Arctic Red Maple GSAR is the same as other 41mm GSAR models. You have 41mm stainless steel case protecting the Sellita SW200-1 movement, with a 300m WR rating. Topping the crystal, you’ve got a unidirectional bezel. Then, finally, you have tritium tubes on the dial and hands, and a bezel pip ensuring that visibility is maintained, even in the dark.

Wrapping things up

The special edition of the Marathon Arctic Red Maple GSAR is available today, July 1. Only 157 of these special editions will be made with ADANAC (Canada spelled backwards) engraved on the side of the case. If you miss out on those, standard versions – without ADANAC – will be available for $1,600. marathonwatch.com
