Here at WWR, we’re all about different types of everyday carry (EDC) gear. Flashlights are a great thing to carry. Yes, your cell phone flash will work in a pinch, but a purpose-built light is going to serve you better in the long run. If you want something that has a bit of a different format to it, then the MagCoin might be one you want to check out.

MagCoin: what it is

Well, as you could tell by the title of this article, the MagCoin is a flashlight. Albeit, rather unlike any other one you’ve seen before. In terms of sizing, it feels more like a lavalier mic, and in fact you could clip it onto your shirt that way if you wanted. With that size (1.2″ square), and the fact that it’s made out of titanium, means it’s going to be a fairly light piece of kit to carry around. In terms of regular flashlight specs, it’s rechargeable via USB-C, has five different lighting modes (from 5 to 300 lumens), and can run for up to 4.5 hours.

What makes it different

Aside from the actual shape of the MagCoin, where this one is rather unique is the magnet attachment. We’re used to seeing magnets in tail caps of flashlights, as that helps you stick the light where you need it and go hands-free. With this one, the magnet is on the back of the light (opposite of the big button you see on the front). This means the clip is technically quick-release. You can just pull the light off of it, leaving the clip in place. It also means you can stick the light onto a metal surface, and have it shining down on what you’re focused on.

Or, you could clip it onto the brim of your hat, and have it shining forward. Or you can clip it on your belt, your gloves, whatever, and shine the light where you need it. I like this, as it means you can use the light, and then pop it back on the clip base where it remained attached, say, on your bag. Or if you want, you can use the loop to hang it on your keys, or even some paracord.

Wrapping things up

With a 500 cycle charge rating on the 50mAh battery, you should have the MagCoin lasting you for more than a few years. Of course, once that battery life is down, well, then you’ve just got a small titanium puck. So, hopefully down the road Firefly comes up with a battery replacement service.

The MagCoin project wraps up on May 21, 2025, and is fully funded as of this writing. For about $60, you’ll be able to back the MagCoin, with delivery anticipated for August 2025. project page
