As we’ve become more acquainted with Zodiac watches (you can see all our reviews of them here) as well as what they’re targeting to do as a watch company (which we covered in this review), we cannot help but to like what they’re doing, and the full embrace of their “vintage” design cues. While they had introduced a professional diver not that long ago, another is being released on June 24th that turns the dial up to 11 – meet the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Pro Diver Titanium LE.
As with many of their more colorful LE releases, when I saw the photos of the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Pro Diver Titanium LE, I found myself reaching for a nickname for the watch. I think what I’ve settled on here is Sherbet Swirl, between the luminous seafoam green bezel and blaze orange chapter ring. Colors and nicknames aside, you can tell immediately that this watch sprung from a Zodiac design session.
While the handset is technically arrow-shaped, I tend to thing of this more as their “tombstone” hands, which is my own internal canon for their inverted keystone-shaped hands; this shape is then mirrored on the indices. In short, the hands, indices, dial, and bright splashes of color all speak of Zodiac. What then, of the professional?
Well, starting with a watch that has ISO certification and carries a water-resistance rating of 300m, that’s a pretty safe spot to start from. Then again, that was the bar set by their first pro diver. To up the ante to mark the 140th anniversary of the brand, they’ve gone with titanium for the case, as well as the seven-link bracelet. Sure, it sort of looks like a brushed steel, but if you’ve ever handled a titanium watch, you know it has a different feel in your hand. It’s lighter, of course, which makes it more comfortable, and it warms to your body temp a good sight more quickly as well. I’m not saying you have to have everything all-titanium, but if you’ve got the chance and can, compare steel and titanium versions in hand in see which one you like best.
Now, I’ve made no pains to hide that I’m always intrigued by what Zodiac is putting out, particularly in their more colorful iterations. I mean, what’s not to like about a vintage-look diver that’s thorougly modern in materials and movement? You don’t just have to take my word for it, though. If you wonder what someone who saw this one in the titanium (as it were) thought, then you need to check out what Scottish Watches had to say about the watch (seen here). Past that, if you’re wanting to get one, scrape together the $2,495 and head over to their site tomorrow (June 24th), when the watch releases (and will no doubt sell out quickly). zodiacwatches.com
