For whatever reason, anOrdain is a brand you may not be familiar with. If there’s any one reason, it’s probably because they’re only producing 400 to 500 watches per year from their facilities in Glasgow, Scotland. Today, they’re announcing a refresh of a design first seen in 2019, and offering up the anOrdain Model 2 MKII.
The anOrdain Model 2 MKII is what is known as a field watch, offering a simple and rugged design – definitely form following function. Even given that, anOrdain has elevated the lowly design. The most captivating part of it is the fact that they’ve gone with a vitreous enamel dial, which will give a depth and sheen that you will not find in any simple pad-printed dial. Over that classy base, they’ve applied alternating numerals (the evens) and indices, with a complete minute track, ensuring you can easily tell the time.
It’s over that dial that we find the second element of the anOrdain Model 2 MKII that really sings, being the handset. Though the hands are largely open (or skeletonized, if you prefer) they have SuperLuminova tips set into them, ensuring that the time is indicated quite clearly, whether the room is light or dark.
All of this is under a sapphire crystal set into the case of the anOrdain Model 2 MKII. Speaking of, you’ve got two choices for the case. The medium comes in at a very compact 36mm, while the large is a still-svelte 39.5mm; both are just 11mm thick. Inside that case beats a Sellita SW-210 movement, kept dry to a 50m WR rating by the screw-down crown.
In short, the anOrdain Model 2 MKII is one of the most elegant and artistic takes that I’ve seen of a field watch in some time, while still managing to not lose the thread of what makes a field watch up. While these are not going to be limited production, there still will only be 200 made per year. In other words, if you want one, get your order in sooner rather than later, or you’ll be waiting.
