Earlier this year, we brought you word of a new affordable quartz chronograph option, the Fossil Sport Tourer Chronograph (you can read that here). Since that time, we’ve been spending time with one, and are ready to share our thoughts on this watch.

Fossil Sport Tourer Chronograph: what it is

Fortunately, Fossil is not a company that obscures what their watches are about in the name. This 42mm steel watch is a chronograph with sporting (or driving) allusions in the design. As a result, you get a color-matched tachymeter bezel that works with the central chrono seconds hand.

Rounding out the rest of the dial, you’ve got the chronograph minutes at 12 o’clock, chronograph hours at 9 o’clock, and the running seconds down at 6 o’clock. Last, but not least, you have the date display at it’s usual spot of 3 o’clock.

The dial

With a tri-compax layout, many chronographs can look alike. So, how does the Fossil Sport Tourer Chronograph set itself apart? The big thing for us are the applied (and lumed) indices on the dial. These are big and bold, and stand in a bit of a contrast to the printed subdials. It’s also a welcome upgrade on the affordable chronograph, giving things a bit more of an upscale look.

The bracelet

If you’re looking at watches in the price range that the Fossil Sport Tourer Chronograph comes in at, you’re probably not expecting a bracelet option. Or, if there is one, it’s some jangly creation with folded links. Pleasantly, that’s not the case here. You’ve got solid end links, and solid links. For adjusting it, you’ve got the pin-and-collar setup, and it’s easy to get the fit you want, including the adjustments available in the push-button clasp.

Wrapping things up

Frankly, there is a lot to like about the Fossil Sport Tourer Chronograph. The style is classic, and the steel case and bracelet gives you a solid, robust feel on the wrist. There are five different colorways available of the Fossil Sport Tourer Chronograph. If you opt for it on the bracelet (as we’ve reviewed), you’re looking at $220, while the version on the silicone strap is $195.
