When Breguet was creating watches in his workshop, they were basically jewelry that happened to have a very technical little machine hidden inside. Fast forward to today, and I would argue that a great many watches we have now are, well, functional jewelry. If you want one that leans more heavily into the jewelry side of the equation, there’s the Ferragamo Secret Precious.

Ferragamo Secret Precious: what it is

At first glance, the Ferragamo Secret Precious looks like an 18mm wide bracelet, albeit one made of a 5-link setup that we’re more accustomed to seeing on a watch bracelet. Give that top panel a light press, and it swings open, just like all the hidden doors television shows made us thing we were going to find.

This reveals a simple two-handed watch setup, with hands spinning over a dial of either lapis lazuli, malachite, red agate, or mother-of-pearl. The bracelets themselves are set with diamonds and sapphires, emeralds, or rubies, or with nothing but diamonds. So, choose your sparkle.

Why a watch like this?

Frankly, I like the idea of being able to hide a watch face in this manner. It lets the timekeeper fade into being a supporting cast member in a persons look, without necessarily needing to shout out that it’s a watch. And frankly – if you’re dressed up enough to wear a piece like the Ferragamo Secret Precious, odds are you’re not going to be checking the time all that often. So, why not hide the dial under a bit more metal and shine?
