Try as we might, sometimes we just can’t give you as much lead time with Kickstarter projects as you (and we) may like. One hidden benefit is – for some slower-moving projects – you can see if a project is funded prior to putting your pledge in. So, without further ado, the Krons Stone Original S.
If you read through the Kickstarter page, you can see that the Krons Stone Original S is swinging for the fences, at least in terms of the watches they’re comparing themselves to. Don’t get me wrong, a mechanical moonphase watch is nothing to sneeze at (here made possible by the Sellita SW-280 movement), nor is managing to package it all in a 10.5mm thick steel case.
With a moonphase and being that thin, you know the Krons Stone Original S is being aimed as a dress watch. And styling on the dial would support that. The one thing that just is not my cup of tea is the large white ring in the dial. This looks like a design detail (and, sure, it is), but it’s also exposing almost the entirety of the date disc. This is something that I just absolutely do not like. To me, it feels sloppy if you see anything more than just the given date of the day. I know, pilot watches have some argument to have a slightly larger window (so you can tell what the date is even when the hand is over the window) but even that feels flimsy to me.
Now, you might be thinking that the Krons Stone Original S has some sort of semi-precious stone dial on it (particularly at the $999 earlybird pricing), but that’s not the case (and a shame, as that would fit so well here). Instead, the “stone” part shows up in the 66 facets of the crown as a hidden message to “be bold” from the brand.
So, if you can’t tell, I’m not 100% sold on the Krons Stone Original S. On paper, a thin mechanical moonphase sounds like a great idea, but there are just too many things here that are bothering me about the design. We should have a better idea of it soon, as Victor is getting in a loaner of the watch for a hands on review. For now, you can head on over to the campaign page (which is fully funded now and wraps on July 30th). campaign page
