Straton Vintage Driver, Get Your Motor Revving

“Driver” watches fill out an interesting style for me. Many of them look like divers, without the rotating bezel, or maybe aviators without some of the classic handset or marker cues. They are frequently loud, and they often times have racing stripes, for whatever reason (how many of us have cars with racing stripes?). But maybe because of the blend of styles, they do get my attention. On Kickstarter, the Straton Vintage Driver has already picked up a lot of attention, getting funded and blowing past their first two stretch goals in just their first weekend on line (with a Friday launch no less).

Melbourne Watch Co is one of a handful of new watch companies that have embraced and excelled in the crowd-funding market, offering multiple time pieces and, more importantly, delivering a quality product to their backers. Xeric Halograph, Circling back Around

Xeric launched it’s third (and fourth) models on Kickstarter, and the design keeps with the company’s shared DNA, but brings the look back to a more traditional round case. The first Xeric used the rotation of the movement in an open window to indicate the hours, with a double sided minute hand for the minutes. The second time out, they kept the hour hand, but evolved the minute hand so that the time was framed inside a circle on one of two half-circle tracks. This time, the hour and minute hand both indicate the time on half circle tracks, and the movement is shown only with the two balance wheels.

I first saw the Cobra de Calibre brand when the creator, John Lee, introduced his cushion cased first watch on Kickstarter. At the time, I really liked the style, but I had recently purchased something else, and didn’t have the cash. Then he brought out his bronze twin crown, which I liked a lot, but passed on because of another purchase. Now, he has a third watch on Kickstarter, the Cobra de Calibre Chronograph el Grande, and I will let you guess what is going through my head.
