We are normally all about watches, but when the guys at Smith & Bradley put together the Smith & Bradley Beacon Box, I wanted to get the word out.
We are almost at the two year mark since we first brought you word (and did our first hands-on review) of a watch from G. Gerlach (the Otago). We of course have written about the brand since, but have not had a piece in for review since then. Today we’re back with another model that honors a famous Polish ship, the G. Gerlach Orzel 85A.
Mother’s Day is coming up, and as a service to those gift challenged male readers out there, I though I would highlight a few watches that you may want to get for the woman (or women) in your lives. I am mainly going to focus on watches that we have reviewed relatively recently, though there are a few extras tossed in here. So without further ado, here is out Mother’s Day Gift Guide.
I am a fan of Touch of Modern, and have bought a number of items for myself and my house through the site, including a watch back before I started wring for WWR. The site, as I have mentioned here previously, is a members only sale site (join here if you are not a member) specializing in modern goods that skew toward a male audience. Sales are limited time, and frequently include watches. Lew & Huey have been somewhat of a crowd source darling company, launching their watches to date through campaigns on Kickstarter. Now, with a mature fan base, several models on the market, and good name recognition for a new, independent brand, the Lew & Huey Phantom is going on sale, with pre-orders (opens noon Eastern on 4/20, link is not active until then) direct from Lew & Huey.
When Swatch debuted the Sistem51 automatic, I was excited about the prospect of a very affordable Swiss made automatic, but I was not all that excited by the design choices. The original four designs definitely showed the Swatch DNA, but they were not designs I would wear, other than as a novelty. With the Swatch Sistem51 update released earlier this year, there are 5 new watches in the family, really expanding the appeal.
Ever since I was first exposed to Techné (back in 2012) I have been a fan of what the brand is offering – a variety of no-nonsense models with a good mix of styling and affordability. The first watch I spent time with was the SparrowHawk II, and I rather liked the action of the mecha-quartz chronograph. It’s why I chose to write about it again when it was first reintroduced. Well, 38 months have passed since the watch was originally introduced, and the brand decided it was time to introduce a refreshed Techné SparrowHawk II.
Benarus is a long-time friend of the brand, and it is with great interest when we get wind of a new model coming down the pipeline. Though it’s been some time since we’ve seen something completely new, they manage to come out with some interesting variations on their established models. The latest of these is the Benarus Vintage Moray.
As of late, TokyoFlash really seems to be into a sort of 70’s SciFi sort of a motif, mixing wood (for the case and bracelet) with angular shapes and vivid LED displays. This latest somehow manages to call to mind the consoles of Star Trek The Next Generation (which of course is a different era of scifi). Not that they had circular displays, but just the use of color and the segments. Perhaps I am getting ahead of myself here a bit, though.
