I am not a fan of the direction of most smart watches. I don’t need another screen on my wrist to give me my texts and emails. If the notification is so important, then I will look at my phone or computer. But I do see the utility in getting some notifications, especially if it is in a fairly unobtrusive manner. And this is where connected analog watches enter the field. Devices like the Nevo Watch connect to your smart phone and display limited information in the background, while the primary look of the watch is an analog watch.

Christopher Ward gets a fair bit of love here at WWR, mainly because they produce high quality, attractive watches at affordable price points. Now in their 10th year, the company is updating their line of dive watches, the Christopher Ward Trident Collection. The new collection offers four choices of movements, along with a number of other improvements and two case sizes.

Hubris is an interesting thing in the watch industry. You have to have it, or else you are never going to put out a watch. It takes an ego to try and sell a product that (hopefully) lots of people will wear on a daily basis, especially in an already crowded market. But too much hubris and you come off looking silly. By the response that Elliot Havok Timepieces is having with their Kickstarter launch, they seem to have struck the right chord.

Prometheus is a brand that produces nice looking serious dive watches at affordable price points. Through January 31, 2015, they have a pre-order opportunity for their newest dive watch, the Prometheus Poseidon. This is a serious (read overkill) automatic dive watch, water resistant to 3,500 meters with a helium escape valve and several other bells and whistles.

Astoncain 01How do you set yourself apart from the other watch brands on Kickstarter? There is only so low you can go on price, and the features you offer are all tied to a cost. So then you have design, but there are lots of designs already out there, especially with Bauhaus inspired minimalism. Astoncain decided to go nearly as clean as they could with the design, removing even the branding from the face of their watch, currently up on Kickstarter.

Helgray Watches came out of the gate a few months back with a four watch launch on Kickstarter. All four watches were modern takes on a WWI vintage look, and, to put it mildly, they blew up with $159,000 in pledges against a $12,000 goal. Now they are back on Kickstarter with their second, or is it fifth, watch, the Helgray Silverstone 60’s Racing Chronograph.
