Earlier this year I was attending an alumni event and the subject matter turned to watches (how I turned it there I don’t recall). One of the group asked what I would recommend for her to get her boyfriend as a gift. My first question was how much money she wanted to spend. When she said roughly $1,000, I immediately recommended a Weiss. Her question also got me thinking about how I could organize the 2015 holiday gift guide. So for this iteration, I will recommend my favorite watch (or watch related gift) in each of several price ranges. Chances are, if I like it, especially if it under about $1,500, we have covered it in the past, since that is the kind of people we are; but there may be watches here (especially at the high end) that have not graced our pages.
I am not sure why I was recently on a kick of reviewing chronographs, but I ended up with a couple of review chronos all in roughly the same time period. The AVI-8 Hawker Hunter was one that I was looking forward to reviewing, since I wear one of their watches quite a bit. I have an issue with the watch, but overall it is a comfortable, reliable military/aviation themed watch, and a good deal here in the US.
Mom has had her day, and my birthday has come and gone, but it is not too early to start thinking about gifts for dads, and since it is late spring, gifts for grads as well. In this Fathers Day gift guide, I am going to point out some of my favorite watches and accessories that have crossed our (real or virtual) desks over the last few months, organized by price.
Thanks for taking the time to check out our weekly installment, Watching the Web, where we point you toward some interesting watches and articles that have popped up over the last week (or so), and take a second look at what were our more popular pages. Today, I am going to highlight the Roger Dubuis Excaliber Tourbillon from ABTW, the Time Bum’s review of the Prometheus Piranha, and Tempus Fugit’s lunch with the Michael Happé from Gavox. From our site, we have the Ventus Caspian on Kickstarter, the AVI-8 Hawker Harrier II, and The Christopher Ward C7 Rapide Chronometer.
AVI-8 was nice enough to offer a AVI-8 Hawker Harrier II watch for a hands on review, and I was expecting to see it with the black dial, but instead I opened the watch and saw the green dial. For me, this is the perfect color for the watch, so it is a happy accident. That is not to say it does not look good in black, but the green suits is very well.
The AVI-8 Hawker Typhoon is like a fuel gauge for your wrist – and we are reviewing it today.
Today, we’ll be taking a look at some more watches from the new brand AVI-8. In our last review on an AVI-8 piece, we covered their background, so we won’t need to rehash that here. Instead, we’ll jump right on in to the review. Well, actually, it will be three reviews in one, as we’ve got three different models from their Hawker Harrier II lineup on-hand.
Aviation watches. These seem to be one of the more popular styles of watches, second perhaps…
