You might say, for being some deskbound techheads like John and I, reviewing gear from Brunt Workwear doesn’t make a lot of sense. However, gear that’s designed for the jobsite means it’ll stand up to whatever you throw at it, be it walking around town in a new pair of boots, or even if it’s taking a hoodie to the campsite. For me, it’s about seeing how their stuff works both for outdoors adventures, as well as in everyday wear. So, lately, I’ve been wearing the Brunt Workwear Scott Jacket – a lot.

Brunt Workwear Scott Jacket: what it is

Well, it’s all right there in the name – it’s a jacket meant for working in. The outer is made of a heavy-duty canvas (with a bit of stretch to it), with extra patches on the elbows, and gussets at the shoulder blades (they call it the “Action Back”) to ensure you’ve got plenty of movement.

The sleeves are plenty long (even for my long arms) which means when you’re stretching out to hold something in place (or grab from the shelf), it doesn’t feel like the sleeve is halfway up to your elbow. You’ve also got two levels of adjustment (via snaps) at the cuffs, so you decide how snug you want things there, or if you want the cuff dropping further down your hand.

Ready for the weather

In a lot of ways, the Brunt Workwear Scott Jacket is about perfect for the midwest spring (or fall). The canvas exterior has a DWR coating, which means if you get caught in some rain (or spill your coffee), it’s not going to soak into the canvas. It should bead up and roll right off, or be ready to be wiped up.

Past that, it’s got a quilted insulated lining built into the jacket. I found it to be a perfectly reasonable layer on it’s own around 40 degrees, and when things dropped down to 30 or so, I was able to toss a vest on underneath and be quite comfortable.

Wearing the Brunt Workwear Scott Jacket

While canvas jackets can often feel stiff, the Brunt Workwear Scott Jacket felt plenty broken-in right out of the box. Additionally, they have a super-soft fabric lining at the cuffs and collar, so you don’t have the rougher canvas right up against your neck or hands.

Once I got going about my day, I really did not feel encumbered at all, with plenty of range of movement without the jacket feeling overly baggy or boxy. Sometimes work coats can be like that, particularly those hoodie-style ones. To my eye, this looks like a jacket that feels a bit moto-inspired. It hits just slightly below the waist to keep coverage when you’re bending over, and the tall collar is there to block the wind. For me, I found the overall fit to be as flattering as it was comfortable.

But what about the pockets?

Can’t walk away without talking about those, right? Whether you’re on the job site, wandering down a trail, or even just on a donut run, you’ve got to have a place to stash stuff. You’ve got two hip pockets (with zippered enclosures) on the front, great for stashing gloves or your keys. Up on the chest, you’ve got another two pockets.

Externally, that pocket is on the left side, while the inside pocket of the jacket is on the right. Both of these are zippered, and all pockets have that soft lining. I found the internal one handy for stashing the cell phone or wallet, while the outside pocket was perfect for a small notebook, pen, or even a snack. Oh, and while it’s not a pocket, you should know the main zipper is a two-way zipper, so you can open up the bottom of the jacket when you’re sitting or crouching.

What about the design inspiration?

Even if you’re relatively new to Brunt Workwear, you know that their gear is not just some generic design. They’re getting inspiration (and design input) from people who actually build things with their hands. In this case, it’s a fellow who’s restoring old axes to new (and usable) glory. Here’s what they say:

Our guy Roy Scott is all about bringing back the old-school ways to the present day. He spent a number of years as an engineer in Washington state before pursuing a masters in Recreation Administration. Roy’s love for nature and outdoor exploration lead him to take up axe restoration in his spare time. But folks became obsessed with his work, and he was eventually able to set up a shop restoring old American axes full-time in Warsaw, Kentucky. His appreciation for heritage craftsmanship made him a no-brainer to represent our take on the traditional tradesman work jacket.

An engineer who loved the outdoors was the inspiration for this jacket? No wonder it clicked so well for me.

Wrapping things up

If you couldn’t tell from that previous sentence (or what I’ve written througout), I’ve been very, very impressed with the Brunt Workwear Scott Jacket. For the past few weeks (when it’s not been bitterly freezing), it’s been about the only jacket I’ve worn. And, frankly, I’m going to be bummed once it’s too warm out there for it (but hey, there’s always fall to look forward to).

Time will tell, of course, how it holds up, but so far, it’s been a great daily companion. If you’re looking for a good spring/fall jacket that also happens to be ready to put up with some hard work (and/or bashing through the forest), the Brunt Workwear Scott Jacket is for you. It’s available in two colors (brown, as reviewed, or grey) and in sizing from S – 4XL. It’s only $99.99 (which feels like a steal), directly from bruntworkwear.com
