Watching the Web for March 12, 2016

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

Here we are, weekend #2 in March, and time for the Watching the Web. But first, don’t forget to set your clocks ahead for the start of Daylight Saving Time (unless you live in Arizona, in which case, nevermind…). As we usually do in this space we get to point you toward a couple of interesting articles we find on other watch blogs, and then also highlight our own popular posts. from the World Wide Web, I wanted to highlight a really cool looking titanium watch, a Fabergé for the ladies, and a dive watch for the divers amongst the masses. From our site, we have the Timex Waterbury, the Deep Blue Daynight SCUBA, and teh Novus.

The WWR March Giveaway: a Thomas Earnshaw Grand Calendar

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

The folks at Thomas Earnshaw have been nice enough to supply us with a few watches for reviews over the years, and for the WWR March Giveaway, I am going to pass on one of my review watches to you, our dear readers. I looked at the Thomas Earnshaw 1805 Grand Calendar almost a year ago, and thought it was a nice dress watch for the price. The watch has a lot going on, but it is still readable.

Here we are, the final weekend of February, and your regular Saturday feature, Watching the Web. We at WWR use this feature to point out some interesting watch related articles and reviews we come across when we check out other blogs, and we take a moment to look back at the more popular posts on our own site over the last week or so. From the wider blog-o-sphere, I wanted to point you to three new takes on smartwatches (and minus this, not a single mention of the Apple Watch). From our own site, you readers made our posts on the Division Furtive Type 50, some EDC storage solutions, a sale at Xetum, and the Squarestreet Aluminium the most read articles.

The Marloe Cherwell – A Personal Relationship

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

OK, you only have a few dozen hours to get behind the crowd-funded kick off of the Marloe Cherwell, but better late than never, am I right? The brand was nice enough to loan me black and white dial versions, and I really liked them. OK, I was probably predisposed, since the watches are hand wound minimalist watches without a date window, but just because a watch was built practically with me in mind, that does not mean I would love it, or does it?

Welcome to Watch Video Rewind, and this is your absolute last reminder from your friends at Wrist Watch Review about Valentine Day. If you have not yet picked up something for your sweetie, head out now. We’ll be here when you get back. Now that you are back, and for those that already did their shopping: In honor of the ladies, I am going to show a few video that highlight watches designed and marketing with the fairer sex in mind.

Is it half-way through February already (did you do your Valentine’s day Shopping yet?), and time for our Saturday feature, Watching the Web. Here, we look though some of the other watch-centric web sites and highlight a few that we think merit your attention. We also get to show you what was most popular over the last week or so on our own site. From the web at large, I wanted to highlight the Mühle-Glashütte 29er, a round up of watches celebrating the Year of the Monkey, and the Dievas MG-1. From our articles, the Ventus Black Kite, John gift pick of he Seiko Automatic Deep Blue, and the Vortic Boston 48 were the most popular posts.

Pacific Standard Time Wood Watches, Sealed for Their Protection

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

There was a period when I was intrigued by the possibilities of a wooden watch case. They were a little unique looking, they were not very common, and they were different. Then, in a flash, they were everywhere and generic, and the limitations of the material really came into focus. The Pacific Standard Time Wood Watches hopes to at least limit one of the material’s obvious flaws, a lack of water resistance. It also looks pretty good, though I would have preferred an auto over a quartz chronograph.

Vortic Boston 48, Take a Step Back in Time

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

I very rarely get excited about the packaging of a watch; hey it is a box… If there is an accessory in there, a watch roll, a tool, spare straps, then it is a very nice bonus. But when I pulled the Vortec Boston 48 out of it’s shipping box to reveal the out packaging, string wrapped and wax sealed, I was instantly feeling like I was unwrapping an old school product, even though it was shipped vial UPS next day from ½ way across the country.

Christopher Ward C60 Trident Chronograph Pro 600, Now Available for Pre-Order

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

The diver’s chronograph is an interesting combination of features, and the Christopher Ward C60 Trident Chronograph Pro 600 is the latest entry, and the brand’s first, into that category. Now, I own a diving chrono (not from CW, another brand), and I like the look, but the complication is certainly not going to be useful for diving. With the screw down protectors for the pushers, it can’t be operated underwater, so it is a stylistic choice here. You want a diver as you swim deep into the paperwork at your desk, and you like the features of a chronograph. The usefulness of the complication aside, I do think it is a very attractive watch.
