Ressence, Simplified

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

The Ressence Type 3 watch was shown last year as BasselWorld and received a lot of press and even the Revelation Watch Prize at last tear's Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix. It was one sexy watch, really unlike anything else on the market. The closest looking product on the market would be a smart watch with e-ink, but the Ressance is pure mechanical watchmaking beauty. Now, in time for BasselWorld 2014 comes the Type 1 from Ressance.

Kickstart a Minimalist Chronograph

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

Talley & Twine wants to upgrade your style. They want you to buy a watch from the “World’s Best Dressed Watch Company.” Now, I am going to say that it is pretty unlikely that Talley & Twine is the world’s best dressed watch company. Maybe they are, but I have my doubts. Buying a watch from them will not put you on a list of 10 best dressed gentlemen. But the Worley Chronograph that is available now on Kickstarter is a pretty nice looking watch. I would hazard that it could possibly make you a better dressed, depening on what else you might have on your wrist.

A Wooden Arrow

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

I am a fan of watches made from alternative materials, and have always likes wooden watches, though I have yet to pull the trigger on one myself. A new watch project on kickstarter, The Arrow Project Watch, is an easy way to jump on the wooden watch trend yourselves. The watch itself is a basic quartz three hander with date, styled like a diver. The movement is not specified, so it is pretty likely that the watch is not going to contain a name brand movement, especially not for $99 Australian Dollars ($90 US), plus shipping.

Helgray Takes to the Sky

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

Helgray Watches out of Montreal Canada has a fairly ambitious project, launching 4 new military themed watches on kickstarter. The watches cetainly have some common DNA across the styles, but they all use unique movements and complications. Helgray is rolling out the Field Officer, a 3 hander with date; the California, with a sub dial for seconds at 6:00; the GMT, which provides a second time zone; and the Skyfighter, a dual register chronograph with date.

A Tokyo Flash for the Environmentally Conscious Data Smuggler

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

TokyoFlash has been creating unusual digital watches for a while. They have a variety of different ways to represent time on the watch, some straight forward and inventive, some a little tougher to read. The Kisai Upload walks between the line between the two, using the same type of system utilized for road markings to represent the time on the watch.

Devon Goes for the Gold

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

The Devon Tread watch was one of the first of the way out there modern watches that I found absolutely fascinating and drool worthy. The First Tread was a modern engineering marvel, ready to be worn by captains of industry and political movers and shakers, but it also had an ascetic that would feel at home on the wrist of a steam-punk enthusiast.

Bronze is not just for 3rd Place

Matt Himmelstein By Matt Himmelstein

A new Kickstarter campaign is starting from Zelos, offering a 100M water resistant diver with a couple of unique twists. Common to the line is an internally rotating bezel, which I am seeing on a few higher end dive watches, but not in this price and feature range yet. What is most unique in a relatively inexpensive watch like this is the choice of a bronze case as an alternative to the 316 stainless that is also offered. Fitting for the materials of choice, the watch is named the Helmsman.
