A Trio of Kickstarter Projects

A trio of watches have popped up on Kickstarter lately, one from a brand we know, one associated with a brand we know, and one from a newcomer. There is the Portsea by Melbourne Watch Company, a brand who’s previous watch I reviewed, and liked a lot. Second up is the inaugural model from Throne Watches. Though it is a new brand, assembly is being outsourced to Smith & Bradley, a brand Patrick has covered. Finally is the newcomer, Instrmnt Limited, with the Instrmnt 01.

Weiss Watch Company Standard Issue, Just Your Standard American Issue

American watches have been popping up more and more on the site, some by design and some by accident. The Weiss Watch Standard Issue is one of those accidental finds, something I came across while checking out site dedicated to cool toys for guys. The fact that is it is assembles in Los Angeles, a few miles from where I write this and the city where I grew up, is a bonus in my eyes. I am a fan of clean, readable designs with interesting touches, so this watch really ticks off the right boxes for me.

I like finding good values in a watch, without resorting to too many compromises. There are values to be had at all different price points, but at the entry level point, I find that you have to sacrifice more of what you would want to get a good value. Enter a kickstarter campaign for the Brigade 7 Scope watch, an automatic with a lot of features for a very low introductory price.

Orbital by element watch, A Family Affair

There are a lot of kickstarter watch projects where the creator has a dream of designing a watch, and then connects with a manufacturer in China to produce the watch. Well, element watches adds a twist to that formula, in that the watch manufacturer back in China is owned by the designer’s father. The Orbital by element watch is the company’s second bite at the kickstarter apple, and in my opinion it is a more attractive watch than the (unsuccessful) first project.

You learn something new every day. I had seen Tsovet watches on-line and in stores, and with the “Swiss Made” designation, I just figured they were a European brand selling their wares on these shores. Little did I realize that the brand is actually out of Newport Beach, a mere couple of miles from where I sit writing this review. The Watch Co., an authorized retailer of Tsovet watches was kind enough to send me one a Tsovet SVT-RS40 men’s analog watches for review, and I have really enjoyed wearing it.

Christopher Ward is a watchmaker that gets a fair bit of space on our pages. Not because they pay us, or advertise on the site, but because they make really nice watches and sells them at affordable price points. I have one, a friend of mine has one, and I am pretty sure Patrick has one. But all of these have someone else’s watch movement ticking away beneath the attractive design. Well, CW just changed the equation. The C9 Harrison 5 Day Automatic houses the brand’s first in-house movement, boasting a (you guessed it) 5 day power reserve.

The other day I wrote about 2 new smart watches that are driven by a single purpose, one to give you the score for your favorite soccer team, and the other to help you track your fitness. Today’s watch goes in the other direction, a connected device that has the goal of being a complete interface with your smart phone. The Moment Smartwatch is more of a full screen smart bracelet that interacts with your phone, and also tells the time.

A lot of smart watches I see try to be everything. Email, facebook posts, texts, weather, and so on and so on. They are not watches in a traditional sense, but rather wearable computers that display the time. Today, I wanted to highlight two watches that are more “connected” watches than a do everything wearables. The HotBlack by Hoptroff.com and the Withings Activé, with the former connecting you to your favorite football (soccer) team and the latter tracking your daily fitness goals. Interestingly, both watches are coming out of the UK.

TokyoFlash Gets Less Cryptic

TokyoFlash has made a name for themselves creating digital watches that can be… a wee bit tough to read. With one of their latest designs, the Kisai Rogue Touch Silicon, they have bucked their own trend a bit, and created a watch with two time zones that is actually readable at a glance, with a minimal amount of training.

The Other Watch Company in Detroit

Like that Clint Eastwood/Chrysler Commercial from the 2012 Superbowl, Detroit is not done yet. Shinola has done a good job in marketing their American Made roots with their quartz driven watches, and now the Detroit Watch Company is offering automatic watches made in the motor city, though of foreign sourced parts.
