Christopher Ward C70 D-Type, Get your motor running

Cars and watches seem to go together, don’t they (Morris Mini/Mini Cooper, Ferrari, Aston Martin, the whole Scuderia catalog…)? And one of the staff favorite brands, Christopher Ward is making yet another entry into this field. The Christopher Ward C70 D-Type is set to pay homage to the Le Mans winning Jaguar D-Type from the 1950s. In line with the previous car/watch pairings (the Ferrari and Aston), the watch is based on the C70 quartz chronograph and color matched to the car.

I like dive watches. My first automatic, years ago, was an inexpensive (Freestyle I think) dive watch that I purchased because I started diving. For years, my daily watch was a Eco-Drive titanium dive watch. My first purchase on kickstarter (and the direct link to me writing for this site) was an Anstead dive watch. My first high end watch is likely going to be the Omega Seamaster in orange (one I run out of other things to spend $6,000 on). But let’s be honest, these are no longer tools for diving, rather they are fashion choices.

A grail watch, the thing that dreams are made of. We all have them, well out of our price range watches to aspire to… one day. Touch of Modern (a private, limited time sale site, free to join) is running couple of sales right now (various brands, Breitling) on several drool worthy watches, with prices reduced (at least for me) from the stratosphere to the mere upper atmosphere. Maybe, just maybe, a 60% or so price drop will entice someone to pull a trigger.

I don’t think that there is a hard corps Star Wars fan alive who does not know that the Lars homestead on the planet of Tatooine was filmed, not in a Hollywood soundstage or back lot, but in the desert of Tunisia in North Africa. So it is not in a galaxy far, far away, but rather on a continent fairly far, far away from most readers. But some enterprising folks have gone out and collected sand from the area and used it to create the Tatooine Sand Watch, now available on kickstarter.

My exposure to new watch brands frequently comes not from traditional watch industry sources, but rather from the world of design and gadgets, especially through other web sites that curate cool new items. When I saw the Matthew Humphries Design MHD02, it really resonated with me. The design is clean, bold, and readable with just a dash of color. I wish it were a tad bigger, but then I would be really tempted to buy one for myself.

In both cases, the watch itself has to be sold at a low price point, but the former only has that going for it, while the latter offers something else, a deign, a point of interest, some reason to like the watch other than the price. The Twigs Woodwear Natural Time is an inexpensive watch, not necessarily a cheap one. At $50 or less, it hits a low price point, but it offers something back in the way of the materials of construction.

After all, one did sell at auction for the princely sum of $52,000,000. But what if you could own a piece of one? A small sliver, but a piece none the less? That is what Christoper Ward is offering with the C70 3527 GT Chronometer, a bit of the metal from one of these cars built into the watch.
