In an earlier post, I brought to your attention a watch you could build yourself. If you’ve already done that one (or just are looking for something to do on a lazy weekend), this is another great (and affordable option).
Over at Adafruit, they have the Times Square, with a display driven by 64 LEDs enabling a sort of scrolling marquee:
64 LEDs light up to tell you the time in a variety of ways. Built into the kit are 3 different watch ‘faces’ – a scrolling marquee with time and date, a binary watch display (for geeks, robots and binary fans), and a moon phase display (for beach-combers, werewolves). There’s also a built in battery meter so you can check your battery life.
Of course, with you getting 500-1000 uses out of a regular ol’ coin cell battery, battery life really won’t be too much of a concern. Though, with that scrolling effect (shown above), I think I’d burn through that battery in about a month after I first built it.
Now, understandably (given the DIY electronics inside the case) this is a larger watch, though the minimalistic casing seems to be keeping that as slim as it can. Should you want something that’s more rounded (and don’t mind adding bulk), you can 3D print your own enclosure; more info on that is here (and is pictured below).
Regardless of the case, at $30 (product page) this could be a very fun project for the more electronically-inclined watch afficionado.
