Even with as many watches as I’ve seen over the years, I still managed to be surprised every now again. And pleasantly so! One of the latest very pleasant surprises that I ran across is the delightful Paulin Neo.
Now, credit where credit is due, it was via Justin Frost’s Instagram feed (you may know him better as the Editor-in-Chief over at WatchUSeek) that I learned of Paulin and the Neo. Once I saw the photos, I reached out immediately to the brand to get more information and photos. That brings us up to today.
Now, as to what caught my eye at first, it is most definitely the design. While there’s a more sedate white dial, it’s that pale blue (with it’s pink numerals) and the mustard yellow dials that caught my eye. A new brand using color in clever ways is always a good idea, in my mind. That wasn’t all they did, though. Paulin actually designed a new font to use for their dial. Mix that in with the very architectural handset they have on the Neo, and you’ve got one very design-forward look that scratches an itch in a very satisfactory way.
For all the boldness of the dial on the Paulin Neo, the watch itself is something I’m very much a fan of these days – compact. The 38mm case diameter means it’ll be wearable on a wide variety of wrists. The 11.6mm thickness makes it seem like it’ll be a weird ratio here, but look at that case design. With the step up from the shoulder of the case to the crystal, you’ve got a thinner visual than the specs might suggest (sort of like the Merci LMM-01 we reviewed).
Tucked into that case, the Paulin Neo is driven by a Seiko NH35A movement, which means you’ll have a reliable heart in the watch while helping keep the costs low (£395 / approx $514). While I’m surprised I’d not heard of Paulin before, this collaboration with anOrdain (both Scottish brands, by the way) is one that I’m glad popped up on my radar. paulinwatches.com
