You know doubt know Undone. They’ve done a wide variety of semi-custom watch builds, and even recently had a Batman license they played around with. This time out, they’re heading to the vintage skies with the Undone Aero.
Normally, when I read through watch PR, it’s more of a skim than in-depth memorization of what is in there. This time, though, they had a statement in there that really jumped out at me – that the rotating bezel did not originate first with dive watches (as we might suspect) but with pilot watches:
The rotating bezel; by P.V.H Weems was invented with one goal in mind – to aid pilots with a tool to navigate the open skies. In the hands of a skilled user, the mechanical accuracy can be harnessed to pinpoint flight paths. Accuracy in aviation was a must – an error of 10 seconds or more could result in a navigation miscalculation of hundreds of miles over the course of a flight. As a nod to the reliability expected from pilots, the rotating bezel is precise with a robust, ergonomic upgrade from the second-setting dial.
For this old-school pilot watch look, the Undone Aero is available in two different dial configurations. The cream-colored dial is called the “Scientific” with hands that stretch to their respective scales (something I really rather appreciate). The black dial is known as the “Commando” and has a look we rather more associate with a military watch – a secondary 24-hour scale and a simpler handset.
Both versions of the Undone Aero are housed in the same case (see below for specs) and feature a secondary crown that acts as bezel lock, ensuring that the bold bezel is not knocked off of where you set it to. The Undone Aero is powered by the SII NH35A automatic movement, and are avialble for $365. To get your order in, head on over to undone.com.
