Head for the water with the new Glashütte Original SeaQ collection

While I’ve not handled a great many watches from Glashütte Original, the few that I’ve handled (see one here) have left me quite impressed, particularly those with the big date complication. Just the way those date discs fit so well together is a delight. Something of a surprise – of the delightful variety – was seeing that big date complication fitted to one of the three new Glashütte Original SeaQ models that were just announced.

While I don’t want to discount the other versions released (there’s a 69-piece limited edition – the Glashütte Original SeaQ 1969 – and the regular production model the Glashütte Original SeaQ), for me, the Glashütte Original SeaQ Panorama Date is the star, all because of that big-date complication. First off, the big date complication is the same as we’ve seen on other models from the brand – two tightly enmeshed discs that crisply show you the date. Also, the position at 4 o’clock on the dial is nothing new in the world of dive watches. But, just as GO likes to do things a little differently by installing the bracelet reverse of what you’d expect, the date display is different as well.

As you can plainly see, the date on the Glashütte Original SeaQ Panorama Date is in a horizontal orientation, rather than angled in like an indice. This keeps in inline with the text on the lower portion of the dial, and gives the overall layout of the dial a unique look. The handset here is also on the more unique side as well. By comparing the hands, you can see how the hour hand is literally a subset of the hour hand, which is extended and has the large arrow-head pointer on it. All in all, it keeps things nice and legible, which is what you want in a dive watch, right?

The Glashütte Original SeaQ lineup is very clearly a dive watch series, and rather unlike what we’d more commonly expect from the brand. With the Glashütte Original SeaQ Panorama Date we really see that dive watch recipe jazzed up a bit, and gives us something interestingly different. The non-panorama date models start off at 8,500 EUR on a strap with buckle, 8,800 EUR with a deployant strap, and tops out at 9,700 EUR on the bracelet. My favorite, the Glashütte Original SeaQ Panorama Date, takes things a bit more upscale, with the same breakdowns as just listed – 11,000 EUR, 11,300 EUR, and then 12,200 EUR on the bracelet. Sure, that’s pricey for a rough and ready diving sport watch, but if you want to go upscale and don’t care for stuff from Rolex and Omega, the new Glashütte Original SeaQ line will definitely give you some options. The full list of the specs – for all three models – are listed down below. glashuette-original.com
