So, remember how, back in July, we brought you word of the newest watch (and crowdfunding project) from Scuro?  Well, they’re back, and it’s the Scuro Volante coming back to the fore again.  Why are we seeing it again?  Well, that first funding attempt wasn’t successful (only hitting 33%; this newest one has a lower target and is already at 25% funding).  Let’s have a quick refresher on what the watch is offering.

Aside from the unique case design of the Scuro Volante (with the changeable “air vents” on the side), most people are probably going to take notice of the material that’s being used – titanium.  That’s what the case is primarily made out of.  If that wasn’t enough, they’ve also gone ahead and used forged carbon on the sides of the case (those aforementioned air vents), DLC coating on the titanium, and carbon fiber for the dials.

Now, I will be the first to admit, the design of the Scuro Volante is not going to be for everyone.  I rather like the carbon fiber dial (as it gives things a floating sort of a look), and while the forged carbon bits may not be quite what I’d be wearing, I like how Scuro  are mixing up the standard case shape and giving us some different materials in the bargain.

Tucked into the Scuro Volante is a Miyota 8N40 automatic movement, which, on some of the dial configurations, you can see from the front.  I’m not overly familiar with this particular movement, but having Miyota attached to it gives one some level of comfort both in terms of reliability and serviceability.  It also helps to keep pricing manageable, which I imagine was tricky given the other materials in play.  As of this writing, there were still super-early bird deals still available, which has pricing starting at about $250, with the project wrapping up on November 25, 2018.  Again, while the look may not quite be for me, this feels like a good value for the car-loving person who needs a watch as technical as their ride.  project page

  • Would I buy one for myself based on what I’ve seen? Nope, this isn’t my bag, man
  • If I could make one design suggestion, it would be: If those side vents are swappable, let’s play around with a less aggressive look?
  • What spoke to me the most about this watch: The ambitious design, combined with materials we generally associate with higher-end brands
