Ah, summertime. Temperatures are warming up, and the strap collectors are swapping out their leather straps for nylon and rubber options, getting ready for the outdoor activities. What if, however, you are looking for something new to add that gives you something bright and lightweight, and easy on the wallet? Well, then, the Tissot Quickster Lugano may be just what the doctor ordered.

When it comes to Tissot, we generally tend to focus in on their mechanical models (such as the Visodate), or their more technically-oriented T-Touch (which John reviewed at TechCrunch) lineup. Even so, there is a place for a simple quartz three-hander with date, which is what we have with the Tissot Quickster Lugano. For many folks, the grab-and-go nature of a relatively uncomplicated quartz movement has an appeal.

Given that the brand won’t be trumpeting details about the particular movement that’s used (ETA F06.111, for those curious) the attention is really turned to the style of the watch. Coming in at a generously-sized 40mm, this is ostensibly a watch Tissot labels as unisex. While I’m not entirely sure that the sizing lends itself to all wrists, the styling I think will definitely appeal to both sexes.

The Tissot Quickster Lugano uses what I would consider to be very much a “light and bright” sort of color scheme – blue and white are the primary colors at play here, along with the dash of silver from the case and handset. Most of the focus is on the dial of the watch, given how minimal the bezel and chapter ring are. As wide-open as the dial is, it’s nice that Tissot kept things very balanced, especially with the date window showing up at the 6 o’clock position.

Is the Tissot Quickster Lugano a watch that is driven by a focus on aesthetics, and I think that is ok. Not everyone is in to the minutiae of what goes into a movement, say, but folks still want a competently designed watch. Sure, you may decry “but it’s a fashion watch!” and my response is “So?” Even on the higher end, watches are still driven, at least in some small part, by how it looks. We may appreciate technical and engineering aspects of watches, but we still place a lot of emphasis on the look of things. No, the Tissot Quickster Lugano is not for everyone – but it definitely has a place in our world, and I think it will find many wrists to call home. The Tissot Quickster Lugano is available now at a price of $350. tissotshop.com
