When it comes to the watches from Triwa that we’ve taken a look at, they’ve generally been rather colorful – either in the case pattern (as seen here) or just in the overall aesthetic (as seen in this review). This time around, I want to focus some attention on a watch that’s a bit more monochromatic in its presentation – the Triwa Stirling Hvalen.

The first thing that struck me about this one is that it seems to be very much a dive watch – or at least, inspired by dive watches (it carries a 100m WR rating). This comes in first and foremost by the indices that are very reminiscent of a Submariner, and is then reinforced by the timing bezel circling the case. Of note, both the 40mm case and the bezel are made of stainless steel, so this will be one of the heavier watches in the Triwa lineup.

Those aforementioned indices, combined with the silver sunray dial and the polished case make for a very singular color palette. They mix things up a tad with blue at the base of the handset and one line of print on the dial, but otherwise, silvery white is your color du jour. Interestingly, they paired the watch with a rich brown strap, which looks to work fairly well in this combination (of course, you could swap in just about any 20mm strap of your choice, as the case/dial are going to be fairly chameleon-like in that respect).

When it comes to watches that draw inspiration from the Submariner, you certainly have no end of options, both mechanical and quartz. The Triwa Stirling Hvalen is certainly in the latter camp (with it’s Miyota GM10 movement), and it’s also fairly affordable, coming in at $265 with free shipping. All in all, this is a fairly subdued, but stylish, take on the classic dive watch. Some might consider it plain, but I think its a nice change of pace from some of the “in your face” dive watch designs we see. triwa.com

Watch Overview

  • Brand & Model: Triwa Stirling Hvalen
  • Price: $265
  • Who we think it might be for: This is for someone looking for a relatively compact steel diver that is a subtle in design
  • Would I buy one for myself based on what I’ve seen?: Probably not, given the other dive watch competition already in my collection
  • If I could make one design suggestion, it would be: I think the bezel could do with some improvements – perhaps some white lume in the indentations
  • What spoke to me the most about this watch: The overall silvery-white color scheme that they went with
